It’s an idiosyncratic list. I’ve included several graphic novels and self-help books, and even a cookbook. A couple of things are on the list due purely to their significant role in my personal life: the book that convinced me to date my husband (Calling In “The One”), the book that convinced me to marry my husband (The Man Called Cash), and the book that convinced me to change careers (The Street Lawyer), among others. It turns out that 500 is a lot of books!
I’d love to see any personal favorites you thought should be on my list.

Wow, what a great list! I see some that I loved up there as well and I will definitely be dropping back to this post for recommendations from time to time. I love that you have included such a diversity of genres. 500 really is a *lot* of book 🙂

Now that I’ve done it, I think I might re-do it once a year. I noticed that probably 3/4 of what I’d added I’ve read within the last 3-4 years. Being more methodical about reading “the greats” actually works!

Wow, what a list. I’m combing through it to add titles to my TBR! We have loved many of the same books, it seems.

Which ones? Which ones? 🙂

I have read 87 of your 500. While some of your favorites were definitely not mine, most are also favorites of mine. And we have some overlap that I find fascinating. Sure we both liked Joshua Ferris’ books and some other recent popular books, but we also both liked things like Twenty Years at Hull House and Babbitt. However, I was most interested in the fact that you liked Ship of Fools by Katharine Anne Porter. I think it is such a fantastic book, but can’t get anyone I know interested in reading it. Glad to know you liked it as well.

I bet all “Ship of Fools” needs is a reprint with a really trendy new cover. Maybe you could plan a “SoF” discussion on your blog and give everyone a month to read it.

We match on 125 on this list. Which ones? A few of the Pulitzers, the Anne Tyler books, The Complete Tightwad Gazette and Your Money or Your Life to name a few. I was happy to see Pudd’n’head Wilson listed here.

Isn’t there something absolutely irresistible about comparing your reading list to someone else’s? 🙂

Okay, okay now I have to do the list too, because otherwise I would clog up your comments with a huge long answer. Later today, I promise!

Definitely post a link here when you do!
