It’s time for Religious Education!  The following conversation resulted during a paused moment in The Big Bang Theory (season 1), because Sweetie Junior often doesn’t catch references.  I swear I am not making this up.

SJ:  Who’s Jacques Cousteau?

[pause]

Me:  He was a French marine biologist who had a really famous TV show.

RS:  I think that show was what got me interested in science.

Me:  Now, do you know who Noah Webster was?

SJ:  No.

Me: [sobbing into pillow]

RS:  He invented the….  There should be one in your classroom…

SJ:  [blinking]

Me:  Samuel Johnson invented the dictionary.  Noah Webster just wrote one.  Okay, from the top.  Who was Jacques Cousteau?

SJ:  A marine biologist?

Me:  Good.  Who was Noah Webster?

SJ:  She wrote a dictionary.

RS:  Noah is a boy’s name.

SJ:  It sounds like a girl’s name to me.

Me:  Don’t you know who Noah was?

SJ:  Um, he parted the sea?

RS:  [slaps forehead]

Me:  No, that was Moses.

SJ:  Oh, I was confusing him with Jesus.  Okay, Noah was the one who saved all the animals.

Me:  Why would you confuse Moses with Jesus?

SJ:  [shrug]

And thus we find that television can provide an educational opportunity after all.  At least now and then.
