I Read More Than I Sleep

I just realized that I read 6-7 hours a day and sleep 5-6.  On weekends it’s more like read 12-16 and sleep 8-10.

…This is probably wrong, isn’t it?

Booking Through Thursday: Discuss!

Here is my question to readers, in response to this week’s Booking Through Thursday:

Do you ever feel competitive toward other readers?

I find that whenever I go anywhere and see someone with a book, I will crane my neck like a fool trying to get a glimpse of the title.  If I’ve already read it – and often I have! – I think, “Yes!”  If I haven’t, and it’s something I’m interested in, I’ll feel this impulse to race off and get a copy right away.

I’m in the 250 book challenge on LibraryThing, and there’s another member who has read an unusually high concentration of classics and must-reads.  I’m terribly jealous and I get a real thrill whenever I notice he’s just finished something I read in the past.  It’s unlikely I’ll ever in my lifetime get through everything he’s read, so I prize the rare occasions when I’ve “beat him” to something.

We can take it as a given that we read for enjoyment, to learn new things, to see the world through a new perspective, or even just to escape the petty annoyances of life.  That being said, do we also read to prove a point?
