Vote: Least Appropriate Honeymoon Reading
August 21, 2009 at 3:35 pm | Posted in Book Blather | 10 CommentsWell, kids, it’s that time again: time to figure out what to pack for a trip. And I don’t mean swimsuits. What does one read on vacation? More specifically, what does one read on one’s honeymoon?
With me, vacation reading is more a question of what not to bring, since obviously one can usually only fit 8-12 books in one’s luggage. So help me out. What would you not recommend reading as a brand-new newlywed?
(The big day is August 29).
Best answer wins a piece of leftover wedding cake in a Baggie, shipped to your door.

Least appropriate? Maybe The End of the Affair by Graham Greene? It’s a great book, and a great read, but it’s quite bitter and, um, obviously about the end of a grand romance, so perhaps not appropriate for a time meant to celebrate one’s nuptials.

I took Love the One You’re With by Emily Giffin on my honeymoon thinking that a nice light piece of chick lit would be great for the beach but uh, I didn’t about the fact the storyline was more than a little inappropriate for a honeymoon and I don’t really like Emily Giffin’s writing at all…nor do I really like most chick lit…

I think I may narrowly avoid claiming this prize myself. My hold for “The Kindly Ones” finally came up at the library. (It’s a controversial 1000 page novel about Nazi atrocities).

What about On Chesil Beach by Ian McEwan?

Winner!
I laughed so hard when I read that. What could be worse than reading about a honeymoon gone horribly wrong, on your honeymoon?
So where should I send your cake baggie?

I read Special Topics in Calamity Physics when I was on my honeymoon. (And it turned out, when we returned to Canada and I got to see some of my books for the first time in over a year, I already had a copy of it on my shelf here…) It wasn’t wholly inappropriate, but people looked twice at my title if they heard we were honeymooners.
