#2: “Reading the OED”

October 18, 2008 at 6:10 pm | Posted in Uncategorized | 3 Comments

Ammon Shea makes me feel perfectly, perfectly sane.  Not only did he read the entire Oxford English Dictionary in under a year, but the reason he did it was that he’d been reading nothing but dictionaries for the last ten years and he wanted to treat himself.  Now that he’s done, he plans to turn right around and do it again.  Whew.  (Though the sad part is, I’ve already read far more pages this year than were in his OED).

The book is hilariously ascerbic.  Shea includes definitions of words he really liked, with commentary on when he would use them.  I laughed out loud several times.  A delight.
